PRK was first performed in the UK in 1988 and is a remarkable medical development harnessing proven laser and computer technology.

The Excimer laser is an invisible beam of ultra violet light which has the ability to remove microscopic amounts of tissue even finer than a human hair. The laser is extremely precise and works on a special wavelength that will not penetrate or cause any damage inside the eye.

The Visx Excimer laser system is now approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Laser treatment aims to alter the shape of the cornea so that light rays entering the eye will be focused onto the retina. This reshaping varies depending on the optical problem being corrected.

Short sight is simply corrected by flattening the front surface of the cornea.

Astigmatism is treated by remolding the steepest axis of the cornea to achieve a more spherical shape.

Long sight is corrected by removing microscopic amounts of tissue from the edge of the cornea. This steepens the central cornea increasing its optical power

Suitability

Unfortunately not everybody is suitable to benefit from PRK treatment. Suitable candidates must be 20 years or over with healthy eyes and a stable prescription, within the treatable range. For PRK this is usually up to –4.00 for myopes. LASIK is more suitable for higher prescriptions in Myopes and all Hypermetropes. As well as establishing suitability Mr. Kasaby and Mr. Aggarwal will  conduct a thorough eye examination to establish the precise nature of your refractive error, fully brief you regarding treatment options and answer your queries.

PRK Treatment

PRK procedure should take less than 5 minutes with the actual application of laser taking typically less than a minute, depending on your prescription.

The procedure is completely painless as the eye is anaesthetised using drops, however, varying degrees of discomfort, which can be significant, will be experienced after treatment. This will last 2-3 days and can be minimised by resting both eyes and taking the prescribed medication.

We suggest a friend or relative be available to accompany you home. Vision may be blurred during the first few days. We also suggest that you take 2-3 days off work and refrain from driving for about a week.
