LASEK is a new procedure which has been popular for the last year. It is similar to PRK but the difference is that in PRK the Epithelium (a thin layer of skin covering the cornea) is removed to allow access to the tissue to be ablated by the laser. The removed epithelium will take a few days to re-grow. During that time the eye is very uncomfortable. In LASEK the epithelium is gently peeled back to allow laser treatment underneath. It is then draped back onto the surface of the cornea covering it totally. It is for this reason that LASEK is more comfortable during the recovery period than PRK.

LASEK is more comfortable than PRK but less comfortable than LASIK during the first few days after treatment. The recovery of vision is more rapid than PRK but not as rapid as LASIK.

Suitability

The same rules apply as for PRK. The treatment range is from –1 to –5 for myopia and from +1 to +2 for Hypermetropia.

Treatment

LASEK should take less than 20 minutes with the actual application of laser taking typically less than a minute, depending on your prescription.

LASEK is completely painless as the eye is anaesthetised using drops, however, some discomfort or grittiness will be experienced after treatment. This will not last long and can be minimised by resting both eyes and taking the prescribed medication.

We suggest a friend or relative be available to accompany you home. Vision should be significantly better in a few days. We also suggest that you take 2-3 days off work and refrain from driving for a week.
